The One-Way Ticket: 10 Rules for a Meaningful Life

Kyoto, Japan at the Bamboo Forest

In my recent on-air segment on MONEY FM 89.3’s Live Well with Michelle Martin, we covered two high-impact topics: one for CrimeTime—the senseless, brutal murder of 23-year-old Michelle Nickell in front of her toddler son; and the recent aviation crisis involving a passenger who survived being sucked halfway out of an aircraft window.

We concluded the segment with critical strategies for living a meaningful life anchored in the here and now, recognizing that tomorrow is never promised. To truly address how to accept the shortness of life, we must shift how we perceive our daily existence.

“The One-Way Ticket: 10 Rules for a Meaningful Life” provides a psychological framework designed to help individuals embrace a finite life. It is structured around the stark reality that we all arrive here with a one-way ticket out. The departure date and circumstances are completely unknown and entirely non-negotiable.

  • T – TRANSIENT WORLD AND EMPIRES: Remember this world is transient; whatever and whoever we love, we will eventually lose, bury, or leave behind. Accept that whatever plunder we amass and whatever romantic or monetary empire we build, we cannot take it with us.
  • H – HOW LITTLE CONTROL WE HAVE: Accept the reality that we have far less control over external circumstances and general life events than we like to admit.
  • E – EVERY OCCURRENCE IS A GIFT: See everything that happens as a gift and a learning opportunity.
  • E – ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS AND ACTIONS: Enjoy and find daily happiness in little things and actions.
  • S – SHARE OPENLY AND INTENTIONALLY CHERISH PEOPLE: Share openly with the people who matter, telling them how deeply we care and that they make a real difference.
  • S – STOP BEING REACTIVE WITH INTEGRITY OF WORD AND ACTION: Ensure our words match our actions, and our actions match our words. True power is controlling our own tempers and reactions—not what others do or say.  Choosing our words wisely and honestly, while practicing to not getting emotionally reactive to every comment makes us better observers not casualties of other people’s opinions.
  • E – EDUCATE THE NEXT GENERATION: Teach the next generation how to truly live, produce, and be a vital part of society—not just how to survive, make money, and consume.
  • N – NOW IS OUR CURRENCY: Our true currency is this exact moment; the rest of the day and tomorrow are not promised. Be grateful, thankful, and express it often.
  • C – COMMIT TO KNOWLEDGE AND DESTINY: Actively engage with our life essence: increase our knowledge, strive to learn, build, and collaborate with our destiny daily.
  • E – EVERYONE IS A FIRST-TIME TICKET HOLDER: Be kind, be charitable, and realize we are all navigating this life for the very first time. The one-way ticket out is the ultimate equalizer: We all arrive here with the same one-way ticket out: Return to sender—date, time, and venue TBA.

Ultimately, living with the awareness of death requires mastering our response to external circumstances and the acceptance that life in this dunya is finite. When we understand how to stop being reactive to others and focus our energy on teaching the next generation how to live intentionally, we shift from passive consumers to active producers. True power belongs to those who recognize their limits, control their internal narrative, and honor the finite journey we all share.
